Stanley Hall in 1974

75-76. Stanley Hall

Over the doorway to Stanley Hall is the inscription 'John Brown 1662'. Whether this indicates that he built the Hall in that year, or whether he rebuilt an existing property, is uncertain. What is certain, however, is that in 1786, the Quakers' Cheshire Monthly Meeting bought the Stanley Green estate, consisting of farm buildings and 52 acres, from Elizabeth Mulliner for £1200. In 1838, just over 4 acres of the original Stanley Hall estate was sold to the Manchester and Birmingham Railway Company for their new line. The Stanley Green estate was finally sold by the Quakers in 1922.

The Hall had been in a dilapidated state for some time when the new owner undertook restoration work in 1974-75. The first three photographs, no's 75-77, show restoration work in progress, while the final one shows the Hall after restoration in July 1976.
