Opposition to footpath diversion
A FORMAL objection to the diversion of the footpath around Stanley Hall Farm, Cheadle Hulme, is being lodged.
The objection comes from Peak and Northern Footpaths Society which has been concerned since the idea of diverting
the footpath away from the hall was first advertised.
The society's closure and diversion secretary, Mr Don Lee, said this week; “the existing footpath is at least 313
years old and leads through the farm buildings allowing members of the public to see the 17th century hall, which is
listed as being of historic and architectural importance.”
“We object because although a grant of up to £4,000 is being made by the Greater Manchester Council to restore the hall,
we can get no guarantee from Stockport Metropolitan Borough that if the footpath was diverted they would prevent the owner
from building a high fence to screen his property from the public.” he said.
No suggestion exists at present for a fenced-off footpath, but the society is of the opinion that owner Mr M. Halimi,
wants to divert the path for reasons of privacy.
Mr Halimi was away on business until next week when the Advertiser rang him at his home in Cheadle, but the objection
means that the matter will either be dealt with by public inquiry or a ruling may be made by a representative of the
Department of the Environment.
